A symbol is an object that refers to a referent.

A referent is an object that is referred to by a symbol.

We know from previous discussion that there are qualities,
objects and classes.
As nouns the difference between referent and symbol is that referent is (semantics) the specific entity in the world that a word or phrase identifies or denotes while symbol is a character or glyph representing an idea, concept or object.

As a verb symbol is to symbolize.     A symbol is an object that is used to symbolize or refer to a
referent.
A referent is an object that is symbolized or referred to by a
symbol.
An object is anything with qualities, or more accurately a quality
set.
A nothing is an object with no qualities, an empty quality set.
A something is an object with some qualities, a non empty quality
set.
Symbols and referents are TWO DIFFERENT OBJECTS that are used to
refer to each other.

As two different objects, a symbol and referent have two different
quality sets, the symbol has its own set of qualities and the referent
has its own set of other qualities.

A referent /ˈrɛfərənt/ is a person or thing to which a linguistic expression or other symbol refers. For example, in the sentence Mary saw me, the referent of the word Mary is the particular person called Mary who is being spoken of, while the referent of the word me is the person uttering the sentence.

DEFINITION OF SYMBOL AND REFERENT

The first is, that a symbol is an object that is being used by
someone or something to refer to another object called the referent.

For example, in a book, you have the word cow, and the word cow
is then used to refer to some real cow out in the real world.

Or you have a picture of a cow in a book, and its a picture of a
cow named Daisey, with black and white spots, who lived on a
particular farm, at a particular time, and here is this complete
picture of Daisey.

The picture is an object, and the ink on the paper is an object,
and the picture is made of paper which is an object, and this compound
object is being used to refer to the actual cow that existed in the
real world.

The referent also is an object, it too exists in the real world,
just as the symbol does.

Obviously, that's where milk comes from. Moooo!
